GRUFF RHYS @ St.George’s Bristol

1 Mar

Surf’s Up! in Bristol, Y Niwl were support, played their set of Surf guitar instrumentals & also Gruff’s backing band, the bobble hat companions do a fantastic job of it. The Other-Wordly One & his box of alien delights. What the Hell were those illuminated devil eyed tipped drumsticks of thunder? Double drummer poundage, heavy riffs, a build up of layered climatic screaming. The orange speaky intercom Captain of the ship thingy he spoke into? The Mexican wave in a Chapel. The Surf Pact /the signing of inflatable beach paraphernalia. Spazmatic flute playing, twittering bird effects, hush, Sweet Baboo on saxaphone? A lovely interlude with Cate le Bon working her magic. Plenty of querky Gruff chat. And a Top choice of T.Shirts at the merchandise stall. This is the evening you are rewarded with in the company of Gruff Rhys.

Wasn’t he great? Terrific evening all round with a real who’s who of Welsh pop coming on from the sides…

Sorry I missed you, we were late coming in too and didn’t get as far as Zero Degrees. You’re right we’ll have to arrange it better next time.

I have my Green Man ticket, are you going this year? Also as it happens I’m up in Brizzle next week for the Decemberists… Not going are you?

Yep! i got my Green Man ticket, most defo we’ll meet then. Not doing the Decemberists, but when i was at Rise the record shop, i noticed that John Grant was doing an in-store gig but he’s also that night playing St. George’s on the 28th of March, might do that. But i most definitely want to see WU LYF at Start The Bus on the 21st of March. Fancy it?

Good to hear you’ll be at Green Man. You on Twitter? Or wanna exchange emails?
